The giant television screen in Walthamstow Town Square may stop broadcasting in March, it has emerged.

The controversial 'Big Screen' was installed in 2008 and has been broadcasting a mixture of BBC programmes and local features 16 hours a day ever since.

But Waltham Forest Council says the BBC plans to stop providing content for it in two months.

A spokeswoman said the authority was currently considering what to do with it but no decision has been made.

The revelation has emerged after the council applied for planning permission to extend use of the 3.7 metre high screen.

The screen was originally erected as part of a nationwide project to broadcast events such as the London 2012 Olympics.

Planning permission was approved despite concerns from some residents and campaigners that it would spoil the look of Walthamstow Town Centre and be a noise nuisance.

The Guardian is awaiting further details from the council.
