Laugh your way into God's Kingdom at church comedy gig

East London and West Essex Guardian Series: Joe Fisher Joe Fisher

‘Laugh your way into God’s Kingdom'. That is the message from a South Woodford vicar ahead of a free stand up comedy gig in his church.

Father Robert Hampson of Holy Trinity Church in Hermon Hill is paying comedian Joe Fisher to perform his act in the church hall on Saturday night.

Entrance to the event is free, and Rev Hampson says he hopes Mr Fisher, who describes his brand of humour as family friendly, will bring people closer to God.

He explained: “I believe one of the central necessities of life is joy and if your religion takes you away from joy, then it fails.

“I laugh a lot and that is what God wants.”

Rev Hampson says he is a good judge of comedy because he once performed stand up himself.

He said: “It was while I was a student at LSE. I performed a few times and it went down well.

“I have seen Joe on a couple of occasions and he’s very funny. He’s a Christian, but his act isn’t about religion.”

Mr Fisher has previously appeared on regional TV shows during Children in Need.

He has also performed for audiences as diverse as Kent Police, fans at a Will Young pop concert, and once appeared at the Albert Hall.

Doors to the gig open at 7pm.

Wine, tea, coffee and soft drinks will be available at a small charge but people are welcome to bring their own drinks and glasses.

Like you really care.

Just stop this avalanche of negative remarks on every single story you can put your mitts on.

As a Church goer I am entitled to be concerned.

You are obviously not a goer as it does not seem to be in the Spirit of the Lord

I would have thought that this type of 'Entertainment would be far more suitable at a pub or a Social Club, not at a Church

That's odd, cornbeefur.

May I quote one of your comments from the discussion on the Walthamstow Village Spar store in August last year.

The topic of bacon jam was introduced and you wrote: "The world would not be any worse off without bacon jam. I have not tried it as I am Jewish and would not jump on the emperors new clothes ban-wagon if I was not."

One of those two contrasting statements from you is not true. How unusual (written with tongue in cheek).

And as it happens, I am a church-goer and since the vicar of this church is promising some good clean comedy, I can't see any theological problems. Even God is allowed a sense of humour.

I am Jewish, so what? Since when has the C of E not welcomed all Faiths? As a Church goer do you confine yourself to one Church following?

Indeed I have attended many a Mosque for prayers and various Indian Temples.

I urge you to be more open minded, tolerant and understanding. It will be much nicer for your inner spirit but requires constant work and attention to achieve this.

I too have attended many other religious services but would not have the gall to describe myself as a synagogue-goer, a mosque-goer, a gurdwara-goer, temple-goer etc, nor criticise what happens in other religious establishments.

I urge you to be "more open-minded, tolerant and understanding" - not just on this issue but on the many to which you attach your negative comments.

Basically you've caught yourself in one of your numerous lies.

You could work on your open mindedness, tolerance and understanding by perhaps say for example not making sexist offensive remarks on stories on this website.

Even trolls have to be challenged.

This one has been spreading his mean-spirited comments around this site for around five years now, maybe even longer.

I let him get away with most if his comments but my dander is up at the moment after he chose on another thread to describe two good citizens as busybodies and denigrated a female poster by saying sneeringly that he was not surprised to hear that she was a omand and calling her a "bird".

Just to clarify things: Anyone of any faith, believer or non believer is welcome to come along to Holy Trinity and simply enjoy comedian Joe Fisher.

We have invited him again as he proved very popular on a previous occasion and is deemed as "safe" for all the family to go and see!

As stated, admission on Saturday 26th January at 7.30pm is free and will be held in the hall next to the church at Hermon Hill (not the church itself!)

It is our hope that at least some people who attend would wish to join our regular services, so obviously the word of God will be preached to a degree. Please do come and enjoy!! (Secretary of Holy Trinity South Woodford)
