Plans to introduce advisory cycle lanes on a busy stretch of road have been given the go-ahead.

Councillors at the Area One Committee meeting last night agreed the lanes, which drivers will still be able to use and park in, will be introduced.

The lanes will run in Cambridge Park, Wanstead, between Blake Hall Road and St Mary's Avenue, to link with existing ones leading to the Green Man roundabout.

Valerie Sayers of the Wanstead Society raised concerns that £8,000 was a lot of money to spend on cycle lanes which would be better placed in High Street.

She said: "I don't see many cyclists cycling on the pavement in Cambridge Park.

"We should be trying to make savings where we can."

The lanes are being funded by Transport for London.

The proposals will be discussed at the next meeting of the Conservation Advisory Panel on February 13 and feedback from the meeting will be given to the highways officer.
