An Olympic diver who grew up and trained in Walthamstow has secured a sponsorship deal allowing him to continue with the sport - just days after announcing he was quitting due to a funding cut.

Peter Waterfield, who partnered Tom Daley in the platform synchro during the 2012 Games, earlier said he was retiring after the British Swimming organisation said it would end its financial support for him in April.

The 31-year-old told Sky Sports News last week: "It's pointless [to continue]. I have to pay a mortgage, I have two kids to feed as well as a car to run."

But now sports broadcaster Al Bann Media has stepped in, allowing him to continue until the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

British Swimming had its overall funding cut by the government last month after it failed to hit its medal targets during the Games.

Waterfield and Daley had been tipped for a medal but missed out after making a mistake.

Daley then went on to get a bronze in the solo diving.

Mr Waterfield, who now lives in Southampton, previously practised his diving at Waltham Forest Pool and Track in Chingford Road, Walthamstow.

He often spoke of how the pool helped inspire him to take up the sport professionally, most recently on a return visit to the site for Sky TV's Road to the Games programme.

Mr Watefield scooped silver in the 10 metre synchronised dive category at the 2004 Athens Games.
