A pub in Leytonstone has suddenly closed.

The owners of the Lord Rookwood, in Cann Hall Road, have not publicly explained why it has shut or what will now happen to the building.

The historic pub was known for hosting live music, most notably weekly gigs by the East Side Jazz Club.

The club, which has been based at the Lord Rookwood for more than 10 years, has now cancelled all future shows while it looks for a new venue.

Organiser and resident drummer Clive Fenner said: "To minimize inconvenience and uncertainty for all our supporters and for the musicians, and to give us time and opportunity to secure the best possible future for the club, we have decided, with immediate effect, to cancel the existing programme which was due to finish March 26.

"We very much regret having to make this decision and we are sorry for any inconvenience and disappointment that it may cause you.

"We will be relaunching the club as soon as we can and making it better than ever."

The news comes just days before the Plough and Harrow pub in Leytonstone High Road launches itself as a live music venue with performances by six rock acts on Saturday night.
