Artwork by children from a Woodford Green school will take pride of place alongside masterpieces by the likes of Rembrandt and Titian in the National Gallery.

Pictures by pupils from Avon House Prep School in High Road were chosen for display in the gallery after the school took part in ‘Take One Picture’  a nationwide scheme for primary schools.

Each year the Gallery focuses on one painting from the collection to inspire cross-curricular work in primary classrooms.

The painting in 2011-2012 was ‘Still Life with the Drinking-Horn of the Saint Sebastian’ by Willem Kalf (1635). The picture shows a red lobster alongside a lemon and a drinking horn.

After looking at the picture, children at Avon House took their inspiration from watching a fishmonger at work and handling a lobster.

Avon House headteacher Amanda Campbell said: “All our artwork was displayed in our own gallery in the school hall with work the children had completed in English and other areas of the curriculum.

“This is the fourth year we have joined in the national project and we were delighted when the National Gallery contacted the school to say they would exhibit some of our work.

“This is a great achievement and all the school is very excited about displaying work at the Gallery.”
