The ambulance service covering the district has been nominated for an award after uptake of the flu jab in the east of England nearly doubled.

The East of England Ambulance Service is up for an NHS-run Flu Fighters award after the proportion of people in the region receiving the vaccine rose from just over 18 per cent in the winter of 2011/2012 to 33 per cent in 2012/2013.

Tracey Leghorn, associate director of human resources at the trust, put the rise down to nurses and paramedics making sure the jab was available to as many people as possible.

She added: “I am particularly proud of the commitment and determination of all our vaccinators.”

Paramedic Dennis Clarke has a special mention in the nominations for his commitment to providing vaccines.

The awards are due to be held in Leeds on February 27.
