A cyclist who was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Saturday has been named by police.

Edward Orrey, 56, from Penzance in Cornwall, died after being run over in Gainsborough Road, Leytonstone, at around 6.30am.

The driver fled the scene and the car was later found abandoned in nearby Bushwood.

It is believed the occupants of the car dumped the vehicle and ran across Wanstead Flats.

Police later arrested three teenagers aged 16, 18 and 19 in Leytonstone in connection with the incident.

They have since been bailed.

A post mortem concluded he died of multiple injuries.

An inquest was opened and adjourned today at Walthamstow Coroner's Court.

Detective Sergeant Mark Robson, who is leading the investigation, said:

"I am appealing for anyone who saw the collision or the events leading up to the collision to come forward.

"I am also keen to speak to anyone who saw a silver Peugeot 206 being driven between Gainsborough Road and Bushwood shortly after the collision.

"The vehicle would have sustained noticeable damage to the front following the collision. We believe the occupants of the vehicle fled on foot over Wanstead Flats after abandoning the car.

"If you saw anything, please contact my team."

A Met spokesman added: "Officers from the Road Death Investigation Unit are investigating and appeal for anyone with information to contact them on 0208 597 4874 or to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
