Plans for a cash machine to be installed outside a post office have been rejected on the grounds it would be risky to have in a "high crime" area.

Management at the branch in Carr Road, Walthamstow, had wanted permission for a 24-hour ATM.

But officers from Waltham Forest Council refused the bid under delegated powers.

They said: "In view of the high crime rate in the vicinity of the site, the lack of natural surveillance of the site and the experience of attempted break-ins to the cash machine which was previously installed inside this shop, it is considered that this machine would result in an unacceptable risk of increased crime."

Officers also cited possible noise disturbance to residents as another reason to refuse permission.
