A sports centre is the latest to benefit from a £24 million revamp of a borough’s facilities after it reopened yesterday.

Walthamstow Leisure Centre in Markhouse Road reopened after being completely refurbished by Waltham Forest Council as well as renamed – it used to be called Kelmscott Leisure Centre.

The facelift includes a refurbished sports hall with new flooring, an extended fitness gym, a new gymnasium floor, a resurfaced outdoor all-purpose pitch and a reception which has benefitted from a makeover.

Council leader Chris Robbins said: “Not an inch of this centre has been left untouched. It’s been refreshed inside and out, with the upgraded flooring helping to make it a first-rate facility.

“We’re investing in all of the borough’s leisure centres to encourage more residents to get fitter and healthier.

“In addition Waltham Forest Track and Pool will be completely rebuilt creating a regional facility in which residents will be proud.”

Leyton Gym was reopened last month and Leyton Leisure Lagoon is currently closed while £9 million worth of refurbishment works are undertaken for nine months.

The works will see the installation of a training pool at the site of the Lagoon's current seating area, a new flume at the rear of the building and features such as water spray guns for children.

The Guardian has asked how much the works on Walthamstow Leisure Centre cost.
