The Mayor of Redbridge helped collect hundreds of pounds for charity with a bucket collection at a South Woodford supermarket.
Councillor Muhammed Javed joined representatives of the Redbridge Carers Support Service and Redbridge Mencap at Waitrose in High Road at the weekend.
The full amount of money donated by shoppers is still being totted up, but volunteers say they were overwhelmed by the generosity of those who contributed.
The Mayor said: “I am very grateful to Waitrose and their customers and I know that my two charities will make very good use of the funds raised and are grateful for the support given to them."
