A Lithuanian man has been jailed for six years for sexually assaulting a woman in December last year.

Saulius Salyga,33, of no fixed abode, was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court yesterday for attacking the 25 year-old woman in Walthamstow.

Salyga met his victim at a soup kitchen near Walthamstow High Street before leading her to some garages where he repeatedly assaulted her, on December 22.

During the vicious attack Salyga broke the woman’s phone to stop her calling for help, then, when she managed to escape she was declined help from a man who said that he did not want to get involved.

After breaking away for a second time the half naked victim phoned police from a telephone box on Markhouse Road.

DC Becky Woodsford from Waltham Forest police warned that anyone approached by a victim of crime should always contact the police.

She said:"I would like to thank the victim for coming forward even though she was extremely distressed by this attack.

“The victim was declined help from a passer-by, what I would say is this: if you find yourself in a situation where you don't want to get involved, just call us so we can help.

"This was a terrible ordeal for her.”

"Salyga will have plenty of time to reflect on his actions during his lengthy term of imprisonment.

Salyga who pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by penetration will serve six years in prison and will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.
