CCTV cameras along just one Waltham Forest Road have earned the council tens of thousands of pounds in one year alone.
Drivers caught out by the eye in the sky technology along Church Lane, Leytonstone, have contributed to the whopping £64,255 raked in by Waltham Forest Council, in just 12 months.
A freedom of Information request submitted by a concerned resident has highlighted the staggering sum, although the council insists that the money is poured back into the community.
A spokesman said: “Any money made from traffic cameras has to be spent back on transport.
“All revenue received from Penalty Charge Notices funds the enforcement and administration of Parking and Moving Traffic contraventions.
"Any excess income received over expenditure is spent on transport or highway related issues, historically this has included support towards maintenance of borough roads, contribution to future parking schemes and contribution towards concessionary fares.”
“The council does not make any money from the charges, there is no profit.”
The document written in response to the FOI request shows that a total of 1377 Penalty Charge Notices were issued to drivers who were spotted parking illegally by CCTV cameras.
706 of these notices were given to people for parking in a taxi rank and 315 for vehicles left on pedestrian crossings.
