Motorists will be able to pay for parking via their mobile phone from Monday.

Redbridge Council will be rolling out the cashless RingGo parking system in car parks across the borough.

Drivers will still be able to pay for parking with coins, but this system will provide an alternative method of payment.

RingGo enables drivers to pay for parking via their mobile phone, by ringing or texting a number and providing their location along with their card details.

The service also enables drivers to top up their session if they are running late.

It costs 20p to use the service, but Redbridge Council is paying this cost.

The service was first introduced in Redbridge in 2009, but only at selected parking spots.

In the past traders and residents across Wanstead and Woodford have raised concerns that the service discriminates against those who do not have a mobile phone or a bank card.

It will now be rolled out in council car parks, but not in Redbridge Culture and Leisure car parks in Valentines Park, Ray Park, Seven Kings Park, Goodmayes Park, Clayhall Park, Barkingside Recreation Ground, Fairlop Waters, Fairlop Outdoor Activity Centre, Wanstead Library and Hainault Forest Country Park.
