A primary school has been told it needs to improve by Ofsted.

Roding Primary School in Roding Lane North, Woodford Green, was visited by Ofsted inspectors in March this year.

Their report says pupils are not learning basic reading skills quickly enough at Key Stage 1 and that pupils are not making good progress in maths because some teachers’ knowledge of the subject is not strong enough.

The school currently has an acting executive headteacher, Jas Leverton, who was appointed after the former head, Graham Alderton, went absent for personal reasons in November last year.

He has since been sacked for reasons which neither the school or Redbridge Council are prepared to discuss.

In their report, inspectors say: “The executive headteacher supported by the associate headteacher (Helen Radmore) and other senior staff have quickly indentified why standards were falling.

“They have introduced greater rigour to checking the performance of the school, pupils and staff.”

And they add: “The new headteachers have quickly taken action to halt and reverse this downward trend, and attainment is already rising rapidly in reading and writing.”
