Waltham Forest is the 11th least peaceful place to live in England and Wales, a report has claimed.

The study by The UK Peace Index, from the Institute for Economics and Peace, used Home Office and police figures to calculate the league table.

Overall researchers said crime and murder rates in the country were down and had fallen faster than other western countries in recent years.

And according to the latest Met figures reported crime is also down in Waltham Forest, but the rates are still among the highest in England and Wales.

Last month there were 1,794 offences reported in the borough, compared to 2,176 in March 2012.

Burglary and robbery rates, hate crime, gun offences and vehicle crimes are all down, but violence against people is up slightly. There were also nine reported rapes in Waltham Forest last month, compared to six in March 2012.

The top 10 of least peaceful places to live is dominated by London boroughs, with Lewisham judged to be the worst.

The study claims that the most peaceful place to live is Broadland in Norfolk, where there were just eight violent crimes reported in 2012.
