A mum who blogs about her two-year-old’s battle with leukaemia has received a double award nomination.

Karen Attwood, of Danbury Way, Woodford Green, started writing about her two-year-old daughter Yasmin’s illness in August last year in an effort to raise awareness and money for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

Her blog, Our Life with Leukaemia, is read by thousands of people across the world and has helped raise more than £25,000 for GOSH.

Now, with little Yasmin on the road to recovery, Karen’s blog has been nominated for two awards by Brit Mums, the largest online collective of lifestyle bloggers in Britain.

Karen said: "It’s fantastic to be nominated for something like this. Hopefully it will help raise the profile of the blog even further and bring in more donations.”

While fundraising was the prime motivation behind the blog, Karen admits that it has also been a therapeutic exercise for her.

She said: “The other day I went through the older entries for the first time since I started writing the blog.

“It’s quite hard looking back at them. We have come so far and Yasmin is doing well now but I am still in a state of shock about everything that has happened.

“The last year has passed by in a blur but I definitely feel we are close to coming through the other side of this now.”

Since she started the blog, Karen has been contacted by parents from across the world whose children are being treated for cancer.

She said: “They are not asking me for advice, we just talk, but some parents have thanked me for writing about things and say it helps them. It’s like an online support network in some ways.

“We have also received so many donations to GOSH from people who read it. It’s very positive.”

While Yasmin is still undergoing treatment, doctors say she is 97 per cent cured.

Karen said: "Yasmin is now doing very well on maintenance treatment after a bout of pneumonia.

“Her hair has started to grow back and she looks impossibly cute.

“She has been enjoying the warm weather with her brother Isaac and has been running around outside like any normal toddler.”

With Yasmin on the road to recovery, Karen has been able to devote one day a week to Nine Media, a media training consultancy business set up with fellow journalist Becky Howard.

She said: “Spending time on something other than the children has felt like a break rather than work.

“We are very excited about the business.”
