Reacting to air raid warnings and running for shelter has been confined to the history books for almost 70 years, until now.

The Royal Gunpowder Mills, Waltham Abbey, is getting to set to bring history to life with Victory in Europe Day remembrance celebrations.

Visitors will find out exactly what it was like to visit a 1940’s store, toy shop and kitchen, as well as being given the chance to experience the street parties thrown on VE Day, which marked the official end of the Second World War.

Attractions on the day will also include air-raid shelters, jive dancing, songs of the period and battle demonstrations.

Celebrations will take to the sky too, as a Mustang and Spitfire aircrafts will be carrying out aerobatic displays on both May 5 and 6.

The historic site will be transformed from May 4 -6 giving families the chance to revisit the 40’s, or see them for the first time.

Battle re-enactments will take place on Sunday and Monday afternoons between allies and axis soldiers who will be happy to talk about their time at war.

Royal Gunpowder Mills’ Lance Bourne said: “The VE Day weekend is one of our largest events with a number of different re-enactment groups coming together over one weekend to celebrate one of the greatest moments in our history.

“The event also provides a fitting tribute to the courage and determination of the British people during wartime.”

Tickets which cost £10 for adults and £7 for children over three, can be booked by calling 01992 707370.
