A church is replacing its statue of Christ for the second time in six years due to vandalism.
The statue, in Palmerston road, outside St Michael and All Angels in Northcote Road, Walthamstow, was so badly damaged in February that it was deemed irreparable. It will now be replaced at a cost of £1,500.
The smashed statue had only been standing since 2007, when its predecessor was also damaged beyond repair.
Resident vicar, Father Alex Summers, who expressed dismay after the February attack, said: “Whoever did this did more than just throw a brick – they’ve had some really good shots at it.”
Discussions about possible security measures to prevent another attack are currently underway.
The statue still bears the scars of the attack and will remain standing until the replacement arrives in the next few weeks.
Insurance covered most of the costs but generous donations ensured any extra costs and the insurance excess were also covered.
Fr Summers added: “There’s been a lot of good will in the community. People are being very generous with donations.”
He praised the police although those responsible for the attack have not been caught.
The church plans to hold a re-dedication ceremony for the new statue in the summer.
