Four new free schools were approved for the borough today in a wave of announcements by Education Secretary Michael Gove.

The 102 newly announced schools are set to open in 2014 and beyond, delivering around 50,000 new school places across the country.

Two of the schools in the borough are to be secondary schools, one primary and one for students aged 16-19.

DV8 Academy will be for students between 16 and 19, Oasis Community School Walthamstow and Waltham Forest Leadership Academy for Girls will be secondary and Walthamstow Primary Academy is to be primary.

Free schools are state-funded schools independent of local authority control. They are run by teachers - not local or central government.

They have the freedom to decide the length of the school day and term, the curriculum, and how they reward their teachers and spend their money.
