An alleged victim of a scam that has rocked a church community is setting up a support group.

David Sunderland claims to have lost £38,000 to a member of St John’s church in Buckhurst Hill who was arrested last month on suspicion of fraud.

Patrick Coppeard, 48, of Spring Grove in Loughton, walked into a police station on May 10 and Essex Police are investigating claims of fraud by false representation.

At least 80 people are thought to have been victims of the alleged fraud involving millions of pounds.

Mr Sunderland, of Ardmore Lane in Buckhurst Hill, whose wife and daughter are active members of the church, said: “I want to offer help and support to everyone. All views will be respected.

“There are people who want to take strong legal action and at the other end of the scale, you’ve got people who want to sit and do nothing.

“Everyone affected needs something at this time and in the future, be it emotional or practical support or both.

“I’m encouraging people to make an informed decision. If they just want to get on with their lives, I’ve not got a problem with that.”

The 49-year-old law student, who attends court hearings as part of his job, said he also wanted an organised group to push for as much compensation as possible through the courts and from financial bodies.

“The more victims join together, the greater the opportunity we will have of success when dealing with the authorities,” he said.

“I’m rattling a few cages, but I’m just one person. With 60 or 70 people behind you, it starts to create an effect.”

The meeting is due to take place at St John’s church hall on Saturday from 3pm.
