Chingford and Woodford Green MP Iain Duncan Smith has been backed to be the Conservative Party candidate for the constituency at the next general election.

Tory colleagues voted unanimously in favour of Mr Duncan Smith standing again at a branch meeting last night, according to a spokesman for the party.

Mr Duncan Smith, who has been secretary of state for Work and Pensions since May 2010, has represented Chingford as an MP since 1992.

In 1997 he was elected to the-then newly created seat of Chingford and Woodford, which is widely seen as a stronghold for the Conservatives.

Last year The Boundary Commission proposed axing the constituency as part of government reforms to reduce the number of MPs in Parliament.

Mr Duncan Smith objected but said if given the choice he would stand in the new Chingford constituency and not the suggested new seat of Wanstead and Woodford.

However the proposals have been abandoned after the House of Lords voted to postpone a nationwide boundary review until 2018.

The next general election is scheduled to be held in 2015.

The Guardian is awaiting a comment from Mr Duncan Smith.
