Supermarket staff were assaulted and tied up as armed men robbed a store this morning.

Police are appealing for information following the robbery at Sainsbury's in Bansons Lane, Ongar.

Shortly after 2.20am this morning a number of men, one armed with a shotgun, entered the store, assaulted one female member of staff and threatened others.

The staff were tied up and locked in a room while the thieves took alcohol and cigarettes.

A woman who suffered a facial injury was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow, but allowed home after treatment.

Police searched the area using a police helicopter and ground units, but found no trace of the men.

The supermarket was closed this morning while forensic investigations continue.
