Armed Forces Day was celebrated in Waltham Forest on Saturday with the signing of a new Community Covenant.
Community leaders, including Council Leader Chris Robbins, pledged their support for military families at Chestnuts Field, behind Walthamstow Town Hall, at midday to show support for the borough’s troops.
The covenant sets out the assistance the military can expect from the council and means local organisations can access government grants to fund projects to help strengthen ties between the Armed Forces and the community.
The council will also be able to apply for funding through the scheme to help build on initiatives for service families, such as greater access to housing, transport, health and childcare.
Actions pledged in the covenant include supporting former Armed Forces personnel in career development opportunities, to continue celebrating Armed Forces Day in June, to provide free swimming at the borough’s leisure centres to current and former Armed Forces personnel and to continue to seek funding for adaptations to council homes for former Armed Forces personnel.
