A grandfather who has donated 75 pints of his blood over the past 30 years has been recognised for his dedication.
Anthony Riley, 72, of England’s Lane, Loughton, was honoured by the NHS blood and transplant department at a ceremony involving 93 fellow donors at Stock Brook Country Club near Billericay.
The father of three and grandfather of six said: “I started donating when I knew some of my friends were.”
Asked why he donates, he joked: “You get a nice cup of tea and a biscuit afterwards.
“Most importantly, it saves lives. It doesn’t take long – only 45 minutes, three times a year.”
As a 75-time donor, Mr Riley has potentially saved the lives of up to 255 patients.
Derek Carr, who manages donor relations for the blood service, said: “While some donors have personal reasons and experiences that will drive them to donate.
“Others do it simply to give back to their community and because they think it is the right thing to do.
“I would like to congratulate all our donors on their great achievements and I hope they continue to give blood and spread the word about the benefits of blood donation.”
