Three rogue landlords have been fined a total of £10,000 in a latest round of housing prosecutions by Redbridge Council.

Teslim Olawale Kuti, 54, was slapped with a £5,000 penalty and £1,100 costs after his property in Paget Road, Ilford, was found to have no fire alarm, fire doors or fire-fighting equipment.

He was caught after a fire broke out at the property, with the London Fire Brigade raising concerns after it investigated the blaze.

During the probe investigators also found someone living in a garage at the back of the house.

Meanwhile Harprit Singh Saroa and Pritpal Kaur Saroa were fined £2,500 each and ordered to pay £1,400 costs after they failed to get a licence for renting out their property in The Drive, Ilford, to multiple occupants.

They also failed to produce correct documents when requested by the council.

The Saroas, of Hereford Gardens in Ilford, and Mr Kuti, of Hazel Close in Colindale, were all prosecuted at Havering Magistrates’ Court on June 14 by Redbridge Council, with details of the cases being made public this week.

Cllr Michelle Dunn, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “We are determined to take tough enforcement action against landlords who let out illegal and unsafe accommodation for financial gain.

"They are placing vulnerable and low income tenants at considerable risk and the outcome could be tragic”.

Steve Brown, fire brigade borough commander, said he welcomed the prosecution of Mr Kuti.

He said: "The London Fire Brigade in Redbridge have been working closely with our partner agencies and in particular the council’s Housing Standards team to educate both Landlords and Tenants about what is required to provide safe and acceptable accommodation.

"This result provides a clear warning that where necessary, enforcement action will be undertaken in order to protect the residents of Redbridge".

A council spokeswoman added: "If you have any concerns about unsuitable accommodation being rented out please email privatesectorhousing@redbridge.gov.uk or call the Council's Customer Contact Centre on 020 8554 5000.

"The details will be passed on to the appropriate team to investigate".
