The five most polluted roads in Redbridge have been revealed.

Cambridge Park and Cambridge Park Road come fourth on the list of the five worst streets for air pollution in the borough, according to data from the Mayor of London.

Levels of 4.51 particles of nitrogen dioxide per kilometre, and 0.11 particles of benzene per km were recorded there.

A further 0.37 particles per km of PM10 (soot) were found in the air.

Air pollution created by vehicles is linked to strokes, heart and respiratory diseases as well as some cancers and asthma.

First on the list is the A118, which runs through Ilford.

The main road is followed by Chapel Road in Ilford, then Eastern Avenue in Gants Hill in third place, with Cranbrook Road in Ilford coming fifth.

Jenny Jones, London Assembly member and Green Party leader, said: “Londoners can now see for themselves the extent of air pollution on the busiest roads in their local area. The government and the mayor have tried to play this problem down, but the impacts on human health can be severe.

“The mayor could and should be doing so much more to tackle this problem but under his watch London failed to meet EU air quality standards in 2011 and is set to continue breaching legal limits until 2025.”

She has set up a website where people can enter their postcode to find pollution levels for the roads around them.
