Large grass fires have broken out on land close to homes and busy roads.
Flames are spreading rapidly off Whipps Cross Road in Leytonstone.
Eight engines and around 100 fire fighters are tackling one site of burning grass, firs and gorse in a 200sq metre area near Snaresbrook Crown Court.
Meanwhile six engines and around 35 fire fighters are fighting a separate blaze at Hollow Ponds, near Forest School, which is said to be under control.
Nearby roads have been closed.
Crews from Walthamstow, Ilford, Stratford, Homerton, Leyton and Chingford stations are at the scene.
Guardian photographer Ken Mears said tall trees were catching light and it appeared firefighters were initially struggling to cope.
