The Royal Baby has already left punters unmoved.

Though the baby looks set to dominate news agendas for the coming week it appears gamblers in Epping couldn’t care less, despite bookmakers reporting a nation-wide flood of money guessing the baby’s name.

Epping High Street’s two betting shops offer novelty bets on the name of the potential future monarch but they have had little appeal to customers.

Scott Furlong, a Jennings Bet cashier, said he has only had four or five punters come in to guess the name since the Duchess of Cambridge’s pregnancy was announced at the start of this year.

“We’ve not had any big bets, most people on put about a fiver on,” he said.

“We’ve had a few more people guessing the gender, but not many.”

A Ladbrokes staff member who wished to be named only as Tracey echoed a similar sentiment.
She said there had been a handful of bets of just a few pounds each.

She added that despite the small number there did seem to be a fondness for one particular name.

“For some reason most of the bets we’ve had have been for Victoria,” she said.

The name is listed by Ladbrokes as second-favourite, behind Alexandra.

They top a long list of names ranging from the traditional to outsider choices such as Elvis and Barack.

For some punters the length of the list of names means it is a bet they feel is not worth punting on.

Greg Carter, 46, of Harlow, said he had no intention of betting on the baby’s potential name.

“It’s just pot luck isn’t it? They could pick anything, we don’t know what they like,” he said.

“It’s just a money making scheme for the bookies, there’s so many names to choose from.”

Bob Davis, 67, added: “At least with football you have a decent chance of getting the score right, but this?

“You might as well close your eyes and pick one that way.”
