A controversial 'superhead' who resigned after being slammed for inappropriately using cash meant for pupils has been named as the new headteacher of King Solomon High School in Barkingside.

Jo Shuter was named the country's best headteacher in 2007 for her work at the Quintin Kynaston Academy in St John's Wood, but stepped down after being disciplined by governors there over her expenses.

In June King Solomon High refused to comment on reports she was being lined up for the role.

But late yesterday governors confirmed to parents that Ms Shuter will be employed on an interim basis.

The Guardian understands some parents are outraged by the decision.

A Department for Education's investigation into Ms Shuter in her previous job, published in May, concluded that she had not exercised "proper financial control" while in charge.

In two cases inspectors found travel expenses claims had been made more than once for the same thing, which "could amount to fraud".

The report revealed that in 2012 Ms Shuter and her senior leadership team spent more than £8,000 of the school's money on an "overnight meeting" at the up-market Grove Hotel in Chandlers Cross and £4,400 for a similar stay at the Landmark Hotel.

She was additionally criticised for failing to declare business interests despite having close links to school suppliers.

In a statement, King Solomon governors said Ms Shuter had been chosen following a "thorough and meticulous recruitment process".

They said she would take the job up on September 2 following the departure of current headteacher Spencer Lewis.

The statement added: "Jo Shuter is known for her exceptional ability to achieve educational excellence through transformational leadership".

Stephanie Sollosi, chair of governors, said: "Whilst the governing body was to appoint a headteacher on a substantive basis, it was felt that a short probationary period would be appropriate for such a significant appointment.

"The prospect of a substantive appointment remains the desire of the governing body going forward as it has absolute confidence in Ms Shuter's abilities".

The school has also issued a statement from Ms Shuter.

She said: "I feel privileged to be joining King Solomon High School, which I believe has a fantastic future.

"I am very much looking forward to getting to know the pupils, staff and parents, many of whom I enjoyed meeting during the interview process - and to working together to become outstanding, both in the secular circculum and in the provision of Jewish Studies".
