Sailing across the open water, constructing the perfect raft, or windsurfing over the waves can improve communication, lift spirits and bring people closer together, according to one new business partnership.

Last week, Fishers Green Sailing Club in Waltham Abbey officially joined up with a youth and maritime charity to offer affordable breaks and day trips for schools, families and other clubs.

As a result of the partnership the club has created a timetable of activity days which will allow visitors to kayak, sail or drive powerboats over Holyfield Lake in Fishers Green Lane.

Alan Francis, club secretary says that the partnership with Isle of Wight based United Kingdom Sailing Academy will not only bring people into the district, but will allow people in Epping Forest to have the chance to try new things.

He said: “This exciting new venture will greatly extend our outreach into the local community and introduce new participants to all kinds of watersport experiences.

“It will also provide opportunities for Fishers Green Sailing Club members and others to gain Royal Yachting Association and other qualifications at the new training centre, thus adding a vital benefit to current and potential FGSC members.”

Along with the sailing academy FGSC has also joined up with charity Youth Hostel Association so that visiting groups can stay in the district.

Daryl Pride, director at Cowes-based UKSA, says: “Fishers Green is our first full-time facility and its location is very handy for schools and groups, from age eight, in Essex, as well as some of the most deprived boroughs of London.

“Expert staff have already been seconded from Cowes for the summer holidays, plus both charities, UKSA and YHA, are working together to benefit one another on delivering water sports tuition and residential trips.”

Courses start from £22 per student and there is one leader place free of charge for every ten places.
