The first British-grown figs based in Waltham Abbey are now available in a major supermarket chain in Loughton.
The fruit, which usually grows in hotter climates, is also sold exclusively in 14 branches of Sainsbury’s in London.
The growth has been made possible as the recent warm weather has helped the figs to ripen as they would in the Mediterranean.
Sicilian growers at the Abbey View farm have successfully trialled the crop and have increased their numbers to more than 300 trees to keep up with demand.
Sainsbury’s exotic fruit technologist Sam Taylor said: “This is good for British Farmers who want to diversify as well as customers who we know look for UK-produced products.
“It’s been a tough season for our growers so we’re delighted that the crop has flourished so well and we’d encourage our customers in Essex and London to take advantage of this exclusive offer.”
The 140g packs of Taste the Difference British Figs cost £2.50.
