Accumulator bets netted last Premier League season in Chingford nearly doubled next highest town on list
Punters in Chingford might feel confident having a flutter ahead of today’s new Premier League season.
Information from last season shows Chingford is the luckiest place in Britain for big payouts.
When bookies totted up football accumulator payouts, lucky winners collected over £500,000 in total from bets returning over £5,000 each.
Chingford raked in £529,363.50 last season, more than quarter of a million pounds more than the next place on the list - Glasgow.
Manager of the Chingford Mount Road branch Mick Montefusco said three teams comprised most of the bets made in the shop.
“They love their football around the area, that’s for sure,” he said.
“Bets revolve around West Ham, Tottenham and Arsenal, they’re the main sides people like to have their bets on.”
Whether the winnings are down to luck or savvy punters is not known, no matter how many locals might say the latter.
However Mr Montefusco said he suspected the volume of bets taken might be the deciding factor, as the number is very high.
“In term of being savvy, well, theylove their teams but they study up on the football too,” he said.
“In many ways you could say they are well informed.”
Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “There must be something in the water in Chingford.
“Football fans there clearly have the magic touch when it comes to landing huge wins.”
The figures apply to bets with stakes of up to £100 and payouts over £5,000 in Ladbrokes betting shops during the 2012/13 Premier League season.
