The Ilford Lane blaze started in the early hours of this morning
Sleepless residents who fled their homes during the night after a fire broke out in a shop below have now returned home.
Ten people were forced out of their homes in the early house of this morning as a blaze ripped through Chesters chicken shop and the adjacent bakery Durga Sweets in Ilford Lane, Ilford.
The fire took hold shortly before 1am, with 58 firefighters battling to control it for more than two hours.
The blaze was under control shortly after 3am and its cause it currently being investigated.
Islington fire station manager Laurie Kenny, who was at the scene, said: "It was very smoky when we arrived and the shop was locked up, so we had to cut open the roller shutters in order to get inside to fight the fire.
"Crews worked very hard in the challenging conditions and did well to get the fire under control quickly."
There were no injuries.
Mr Kenny added that several cakes prepared by the bakery for a religious festival this week were successfully salvaged.
Ilford Lane was closed in both directions and re-opened at around 9am.
