Redbridge proposals include turning Ilford into a cycling hub
Cyclist could see a significantly improved biking environment if a council bid to turn Ilford town centre into a “mini Holland” is approved.
Council Leader Keith Prince announced yesterday that the borough had submitted the bid to the Greater London Authority (GLA).
The GLA is awarding £100m to up to four outer London boroughs in order to make them as cycle-friendly as their Dutch counterparts.
Proposed improvements include redesigning the cycling approaches to Ilford and the borough’s cycle network and introducing the “Cycle Superhighway 2” connecting Aldgate to Ilford via a new bridge over the North Circular Road.
Cllr Prince added that the improved facilities would also benefit pedestrians and improve the desirability of Ilford as a place to live and work.
A decision from the GLA is expected by the end of the month.
