Three care assistants from Whipps Cross Hospital will be sentenced for abusing patients
Hospital care assistants who abused and neglected elderly patients is set to be sentenced today.
Akosua Sakyiwaa, 38, of Orange Grove, Leytonstone, was found guilty of seven charges of neglecting women in her care at Whipps Cross Hospital, in June.
Sakyiwaa was found guilty of four counts of neglect against three patients, including holding a bed sheet over 87-year-old Joan Masstt's head and telling her she was dead.
She also pushed elderly Elizabeth Toussant, shoving her down into a chair when she refused to be washed and slapped Louise Hodges, 92, when changing her bed clothes.
Co-workers Annette Jackson, 33, of Simpson Road in Hounslow, and Sharmila Gunda, 36, of Horns Road in Barkingside were also found guilty of seven charges of neglect.
Barts Health issued an apology when the three health workers were found guilty saying: “We apologise unreservedly to the patients of Beech Ward and their families for the indefensible failings in their treatment during their time in our care.”
The three will be sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court.
