Waltham Forest College cancelled vehicle body repair courses, citing cost effective operation
Some students have been left in limbo after college courses were cancelled at short notice.
A total of 30 students are believed to have been affected when vehicle body repair courses at Waltham Forest College were recently stopped.
The college in Forest Road, Walthamstow, said the number of applicants was a factor in its decision and resources are being dedicated to popular auto-engineering courses.
Students, some of whom have already spent a year on the course, now face a rush to decide their futures with application deadlines loomings.
A college spokeswoman said there have been discussions with another further education college offering vehicle body repair courses and all potential new students should have access to a place there this year.
She did not reveal which college this was.
The spokeswoman added that any student wishing to continue at Waltham Forest College on another course would be supported.
A statement issued late yesterday said: “The college has decided, with regret, not to offer vehicle body repair courses in the coming year in recognition of the number of applications and the development of the new Centre for Engineering Excellence on the Forest Road site over the next 12 months.
“The new facility, partly funded by the national Skills Funding Agency, will enable the college to expand auto-engineering courses where there is a healthy and growing demand from students and the industry leading to sustainable employment.
“Consideration was given to including vehicle body repair provision in the new facility but it was found that this would have taken the limited space away from other aspects of auto-engineering.
“A further important factor is that it is acknowledged that such training has increasingly become the provenance of the major commercial garages.”
The statement added that the college has a responsibility to ensure that it is cost effective in its provision.
More information is expected early next week.
