A driver has been arrested over the death of a motorcyclist last night.

The victim, believed to be in his late 20s, died after his bike was hit by a car on the corner of New Wanstead and Spratt Hall Road, in Wanstead, just before 9.15pm.

Police have today confirmed they arrested the 66-year-old driver at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has now been released on bail until a date later in October.

A spokeswoman for the London Ambulance Service (LAS) said the motorcyclist suffered a cardiac arrest following the crash.

Flowers have been left at the scene with a note saying: "RIP Shaz.

"You're loved and missed by so many. Such a kind man!"

Jane O'Keefe lives opposite the scene.

She told the Guardian: "I'm really upset that someone has died, it's so awful.

"I've lived here for 45 years and there hasn't been any crashes here for a very long time. I can't remember any in the last five or ten years.

"I didn't hear the crash but I saw the aftermath. There was a motorbike on its side which looked really smashed up, and a white car in the middle of the road.

"There was also what I think was a motorbike helmet lying in the road and I saw lots of people crowded around, presumably trying to help the man.

"It can be a busy road but you don't normally get much traffic on Sunday nights, and it was difficult to tell from where the vehicles had come to a stop what had happened."

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "I've never seen so many police and ambulance people.

"It seems like they did everything they could to try and save him."

The LAS spokeswoman said two ambulances and a fast responder car were sent to the scene.

She said: "A man, believed to be in his late 20s, was in cardiac arrest.

"Sadly, despite extensive efforts, the patient died at the scene".

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash to call the Road Death Investigation Unit on 020 8597 4874.
