Waltham Abbey Developments Ltd has defended its application to build on green belt land in Pick Hill
A developer has defended a controversial plan to build homes on green belt land.
Waltham Abbey Developments Ltd has applied to Epping Forest District Council for permission to build 105 homes on Knolly’s Nursery, Waltham Abbey, along with community facilities and parking.
Waltham Abbey Resident’s Association, which represents 9,000 people, has vowed to fight the plan, which follows the rejection of a previous proposal for a bigger development on the site.
It claims the development is too large and the area will become a ‘dumping ground’ for housing under the new Local Plan, which is currently being formulated.
But the developers say that the site in Pick Hill, which will be made up of 80 per cent affordable housing, will give future generations the chance to stay in the district.
Company Director, Caroline Sheridan said: “Many members of the Waltham Abbey Resident’s Association have children and grandchildren and we know from our discussions with local people that there are no opportunities for young people to buy affordable homes in the area at this time.
“Our development would give young people a chance to stay in the area and purchase their own affordable property via the attractive Moat Housing Association schemes.”
Since the rejection of a previous application in 2012, Waltham Abbey Developments says it has been working closely with council officers and has been listening to objections.
Ms Sheridan added that plans have been changed accordingly and said the development would include large open areas of landscaping.
The company also suggested there could be joint business ventures with community groups which are currently searching for space.
Original plans to include a doctor's surgery have been scrapped and a bus route will be added to the development.
