Plans to expand Chestnuts care home in Wanstead approved
A bid to expand a loss-making care home in Wanstead has been approved.
Westgate Healthcare will now press ahead with plans to increase the capactiy of The Chestnuts, in Cambridge Park, from 50 residents to 62 with a new extension and by adding an extra floor to the three-storey building.
Two residents living nearby objected over fears it would impact on their privacy, but these concerns were dismissed by councillors.
The plans were approved by councillors at a Regional Planning Committee West meeting last night.
Westgate Healthcare director Tara Teubner told the panel that her firm had owned the site since summer 2012.
She said: "We are operating the home at a loss which is not sustainable - it is in depserate need of refurbishment and we need more residents".
During the application process Transport for London had expressed concern that a bus stop outside the care home may have to be moved.
But council officers said this was not the case and the bus stop will remain.
