One of Redbridge's most popular and oversubscribed state schools has again been hailed as outstanding in every way by Ofsted inspectors.

Churchfields Infants' School and Nursery, in South Woodford, was praised for its "remarkable" achievements in contributing to children's cultural and social development, its "relentlessly" driven leadership and its outstanding teachers.

Pupils achieve standards that are consistently above average and they are also very well behaved, a report said.

And, when it comes to making improvements, Ofsted was only able to suggest that its teachers share their expertise more with colleagues and other schools.

The report comes despite a toughening up of Ofsted inspection standards - and the fact that Churchfields was inspected in mid-July, when many schools traditionally start winding down for the long summer holidays.

Published this week, the report said: "Pupils’ standards of attainment in reading, writing and mathematics have been consistently and significantly above average for several years.

"Higher proportions of seven-year-olds achieve exceptionally well in English and mathematics compared to pupils in other schools.

"Outstanding teaching means that all pupils, including disabled pupils, those with special educational needs and those who benefit from additional funding, make excellent progress over time.

"Lessons fully engage pupils and teachers provide intriguing challenges to which pupils respond enthusiastically."

Ofsted said teachers had high expectations of their children and encouraged them to use a rich vocabulary - something inspectors said contributed to the high standards.

They were also very impressed that pupils in classes as early as year two were able to identify ethical dilemmas in books and engage in philosophical discussions.

The school's headteacher Lesley Hook, its governors and language facility were also highlighted as superb.

There is little or no evidence of bullying at Churchfields and no child has ever been excluded in the entire history of the school, the report added.

Churchfields' Infants, in Churchfields off South Woodford High Road, has more than 480 children on its roll aged between three and seven.

The school was also rated outstanding following its last full Ofsted inspection in 2007.

Headteacher Lesley Hook refused to comment when approached by the Guardian.
