Playwright and journalist Simon Farquhar is trying to find out what happened to 'Couples' star Gay Singleton who grew up in Loughton
A journalist is trying to solve the mystery of what happened to a popular actor, presenter and singer who suddenly disappeared from the public eye.
Throughout the sixties and seventies, Gay Shingleton, or Singleton, as she changed it to, rose to fame as a multi-talented regular star of film and TV.
She was a DJ on Radio Caroline, the original ‘pirate radio’ and had a starring role in ITV’s ‘Couples’.
She released singles and presented the iconic music show Ready, Steady, Go, which featured the biggest bands of the era.
But in 1976, when she was believed to be living in Staples Lane in Loughton, she suddenly disappeared from the public eye.
Playwright and journalist Simon Farquhar recently began trying to track her down and then discovered he wasn’t the only one curious to know what happened to her.
He said: “Initially I was trying to contact her to interview her about a film she appeared in, but as she has proved impossible to track down, the hunt has become more and more intriguing.
“I've had contact from so many other people in the industry all wondering what happened to her.
“I know she lived in Staples Lane in the mid Seventies, and the family were living in Avey Lane in High Beech in 1980.”
According to Mr Farquhar’s calculations, Miss Singleton would be around 69 now.
Mr Farquhar said the once-famous Essex girl, who attended the E15 acting school, is missed by many.
“Most people have said that she was nothing but bubbly and happy. But in pictures of her in the 70s she doesn’t look as happy or well as she did five years before,” he added.
“She was very popular. Everyone I have spoken to has said the same thing, that she was adorable and wonderful and they would like to know what happened to her.
“I spoke to a man who wrote for ‘Within These Walls’ . He was a big fan of hers. He said that the last time he saw her she had seemed like a rather troubled soul.
“I really do want to know what happened to her now, although I am not expecting a happy ending.”
