Essex County Council is reviewing school bus routes to see where savings can be made
Free school transport looks set to be stopped for children across the district as the county council looks to make savings.
A six-week consultation began today on proposals to remove services, change catchment areas and introduce means-tested provision.
At present Essex County Council spends £25million a year on school transport, but has vowed to cut the bill.
County Councillor Ray Gooding, cabinet member for education, said: “Quite simply we need to save money right across the board.
“We do not have the level of funding to continue providing the same levels of service that we have provided to students in the past.
"The existing discretionary transport policy is incredibly generous, but it is complicated, unfair and outdated.”
