Parking fee hike could cover lost revenue
3:20pm Monday 23rd September 2013 in News
Cash-strapped Epping Forest Council is considering increasing parking fees to cover a loss of income caused by the recession.
Revenue from services such as building control and licensing have been hit during the economic downturn and leading councillors have admitted they are considering a price hike in car parks to cover the shortfall.
If approved it would be the first rise in off-street pay and display fees in the district for five years.
Speaking at a market last week, council leader Cllr Chris Whitbread said: “We have some of the lowest parking charges in Essex.
“We will take a very close look at each area.”
He added that charges will be restructured with the aim of encouraging shoppers, but may penalise long stay users, such as commuters.
