A new community cafe has pledged to help fund the work of a local foodbank.

Walthamstow’s Eat or Heat group will be supported by a new community cafe it's opening on Friday at the Quaker meeting house in Jewel Road.

The cafe will be open on the last Friday of every month to coincide with 'foodbank Fridays', when people are asked to bring food to one of Eat or Heat’s donation stations, such as Ye Olde Rose and Crown and The Goose pubs, Penny Fielding Interiors shop and Queen’s Road Children’s Centre.

Staffed entirely by volunteers, the new cafe will open on Friday at noon, serving homemade soup and cakes as well as tea and coffee.

All proceeds will go to Eat or Heat, which provides support to residents of Waltham Forest who need emergency food.

Organiser Gary Nash hopes the community cafe will go on to provide in-house money advice to foodbank clients.

He said: “The cafe is an exciting addition to Eat or Heat's work.

“Not only will it generate vital funds but it is also a welcoming place for members of the community. “
