Wanstead mums to set up girls' rugby team
A group of Wanstead mums are setting up a girls’ tag rugby team after successful training sessions at Eton Manor Rugby Club.
Jackie Clune, 47, of Dangan Road, Wanstead, is leading the move to put girls’ tag rugby on the map, after her 10-year-old daughter Saoirse Hannant-Clune decided she was not keen to do contact rugby on a boys’ team.
Ms Clune said: “The club was supportive last year in setting up a girls’ training session on an ad hoc basis but this year we're having trouble getting the girls’ team up and running.
“Hopefully other local teams would follow suit and we could get a really great girls' league going.
Ms Clune’s other children, triplets Thady, Frank and Orla, 8, all play in the club’s successful under-9s’ contact rugby team.
With a core group of only six girls on the tag rugby team including Saoirse, Ms Clune needs at least eight more in order to get two sides going, and hopes to eventually set up a league.
“I was never a rugby fan, having hated the posh stereotypes the sport attracts, but since being involved in Eton Manor I have reviewed my ideas about the sport.
“The team spirit, tactics, co-operation and fun the kids experience is second to none in all of their after school activities.
“Some people balk at the idea of girls playing such a typically male game but parents of girls should really come and see how great tag rugby can be for developing fitness, sportsmanship and confidence in girls.”
