Two tower blocks will undergo a major refurbishment, it has been announced.

Fred Wigg and John Walsh towers, in Montague Road, Leytonstone, will benefit from millions of pounds of improvements.

The size of the investment, where the money is coming from and how long the work will take has not yet been revealed.

Residents are being invited to help shape plans by joining a steering group, which will make recommendations on improvements.

Councillor Marie Pye, cabinet member for housing, said: “This improvement programme will be much more than a fresh coat of paint and some new door knobs, we are committed to work with residents to make real and lasting improvements to their homes and lives.”

She added that improving the security of the estate is a priority.

The Guardian is awaiting details of the security problems at the towers.

However, some flats were burgled after residents were temporarily rehoused following a major fire in Fred Wigg tower 2011.

Residents reported ongoing problems a year after the blaze.

Information on the scheme will be available at a family event tomorrow.

A marquee will be set up outside the estates, where details will be on display, and there will be music, food and entertainment.

The towers were used as bases for surface-to-air missiles as part of security arrangements for the 2012 Olympics.
