Skate park users are in danger due to overcrowding, it is claimed.

The search has begun for investment to extend the facility in Town Mead, Waltham Abbey, which attracts skateboard and BMX enthusiasts of all ages.

Skater Scott Horsey, from Loughton, said the park, which was opened in 2011, has proved such a success that users are at risk of injury at busy times.

He said: “After you have about 10 or more people trying to use the place it gets really busy and dangerous.

"I always avoid it at weekends as I know there is going to be 20-plus little children all criss-crossing around each other and high speed BMXers.”

Park users recently raised concerns during a meeting with Waltham Abbey Town Council, which is now looking for the £75,000 needed for the expansion.

It has applied for money through the county council’s Community Initiatives Fund, which grants up to £20,000 to projects.

The town council is now preparing to approach other potential investors and tap into funding streams for the expansion, which would see the overall size of the park rise from 450sqm to 774sqm.

Andy Bisgrove, 48, a skater who campagned for the skate park to be created, said he wants to see an extension including bigger and steeper ramps to cater for more advanced skaters and afford space to users of all abilities.

A town council spokesman said it plans to make the park safe for users of all ages and abilities.
