There are new leads in the hunt for a West Ham fan who attacked a grandfather following a public appeal.

British Transport Police (BTP) last week released a clear CCTV image of the man who swore at a family on a Liverpool Street-bound train.

When a 70-year-old man stepped in to protect his young grandchildren, he was punched three times, leaving him with bruising to his face and arm.

BTP spokeswoman Lucy Jones said: “Some names have come in from members of the public. They have been looked into and we believe they are not the person identified in the picture.

“However, thanks to this fantastic response, officers have been given new leads into the investigation and will be following a number of different lines of enquiries to find the man responsible.

“We will also be working closely with Home Office police forces and West Ham United Football Club for vital information which can again assist us in the investigation.”

The victim and his family were travelling back from Southend on August 23 when the attack took place.

The family left the train at Shenfield and the man continued to Stratford.
