Baby bank opens in Walthamstow
A 'baby bank' offering toys, clothes prams and even baby food to needy parents free of charge opened today.
The bank , at the Lloyd Park Children's Centre in Walthamstow, will work like a food bank, offering vital support to families across Waltham Forest.
MP for Walthamstow Stella Creasy joined staff from the children's centre in Billet Road for the launch event this afternoon.
Lisa Hayde, 31, a family and outreach support worker at the centre, has been preparing for the launch for months by gathering donations from residents and businesses.
Ikea in Edmonton, Edufantastic in Orford Road, Walthamstow, and the Walthamstow branch of Asda have all donated items to the baby bank.
Miss Hayde said: “I would like to say a big thank you to everyone that has donated so far.
“We have already begun supporting families by giving away the donations.
“This bank is being set up in a time when so many families have been affected by the rescission and with universal credit coming in, services like the baby bank and food banks are going to be more crucial than ever.”
